The town's in a frenzy. We're under attack from forces to the north. Yes, the smoke is here. GF is covered in blue-grey guck. It's difficult to make out Observation Mountain from my office. Considering it's only one kilometre away, you can believe the smoke is thick. And phone calls have been coming in all morning asking where the smoke is coming from. Well, everyone can rest easy. No fires 'round here. The smoke's coming down from Williams Lake, millions of miles from here but due to our particular stroke of luck and geography, we are right in line for the haze.
In other news, in talking to the RCMP about a couple of break-ins over the weekend, they actually told me, "If you're covering this, you guys must be pretty hard up for news." Yes, yes we are.
And floating alert: The Kettle River, in about a week, will be too shallow to float down. I went floating for my 2nd time this weekend and we almost got stuck on some rocks twice. Now this isn't akin to the Titanic hitting the iceberg or anything, but it does make for some nice bruises if you're not careful. Now, all floating attention will turn to the Granby River, flowing from the north. Apparently, it is deeper and faster and thus lengthens the floating season. Floating is a big deal around here, never doubt that.
Despite my ambivalence towards floating, I have to say that the river is a pretty sweet thing. Almost everyday, I've jumped in the Kettle after work. My friend's house is just down the road from a nice little beach, so it's lovely to jump in, go back up to the house, and sit around with a drink and some food and watch the sun go down.
Sunset should be especially nice tonight, with all this goddamn smoke.
